STAR Interview — App Privacy Policy
Last updated September 2026
The short version
The app has no accounts and asks for nothing about you. All 184 questions and answers are built into the app and work offline. It does send anonymous usage statistics — which principles get opened, which answers get expanded — so I can see what people actually find useful. That data is not tied to your name, your email, or any identifier that follows you across other apps.
What the app collects
One thing: anonymous usage analytics, through a service called TelemetryDeck. Specifically:
- Which screens and content you open — that a principle was viewed, that a question was expanded to read the answer, which role filter was used, that the purchase screen was shown, and whether a purchase completed. These are recorded as short event names with the principle or question ID attached.
- Basic device information — device model, operating system version, app version, language and processor architecture. This is what tells me whether a bug is specific to one Android version or one screen size.
- An anonymous app identifier — a random value the app generates the first time you open it and stores in its own files. It is hashed with SHA-256 before it ever leaves your device, and hashed again with a secret on TelemetryDeck's side. It exists only so that ten sessions from one person are not counted as ten people. It is not your advertising ID, not a hardware identifier, and it is destroyed when you uninstall the app.
- Approximate country, derived by TelemetryDeck from the network address the data arrives from. Your address is not stored. This is country-level only, not a location.
What the app does not collect
- No name, email address, phone number or account. There is nothing to sign in to.
- No contacts, photos, files, microphone or camera access. The app requests none of these permissions.
- No location. No GPS, and nothing more precise than the country described above.
- No advertising identifier, and no advertising, ad networks or ad SDKs of any kind.
- No tracking across other apps or websites, and no data brokers.
- No crash-reporting SDK, no session recording, no heatmaps, no fingerprinting.
Nothing collected is sold, rented or shared for advertising. It is never combined with data from the website or from anything else I run.
What stays on your device
The full question bank ships inside the app and is read locally, so it works with no connection. Your reading position, which answers you have expanded, and which weekly reminder you are due next are stored on the device and are never uploaded.
Purchases
The one-time unlock is processed entirely by Apple on iOS and Google Play on Android. Card numbers, billing addresses and receipts go to them and never reach me or the app. The app asks the store a single question — whether this account owns the unlock — and stores no purchase details of its own. Refunds are handled by whichever store you bought from. I record only that a purchase happened, with no identifying detail attached.
Notifications
The optional weekly practice reminder is scheduled entirely on your device. There is no push server, no device token is registered anywhere, and no notification data leaves your phone. Turning reminders off in your system settings stops them and breaks nothing else.
Children
The app is for adults preparing for job interviews. It is not directed at children, and it collects no personal information from anyone regardless of age.
Your rights
Because the analytics carry no identifier that can be traced back to a person, I have no way to find "your" data in order to show or delete it — there is nothing linking any of it to you. If you want to stop contributing usage statistics entirely, uninstalling the app does that immediately and permanently, and the random identifier goes with it.
For anything held about you on the website side — a purchase, a contact form, a newsletter signup — see the website privacy policy, where those rights do apply and I will act on them.
Who the data goes to
- TelemetryDeck — anonymous usage statistics. Based in Germany and GDPR-compliant.
- Apple or Google Play — purchase processing, under their own policies.
- Nobody else.
Changes
If what the app collects changes, this page changes with it and the date at the top moves. Material changes will also be noted in the release notes for the update that makes them.
